Choosing the Right Pregnancy Pillow Shape
If you've started looking for a pregnancy pillow, you've probably noticed there are a lot of different shapes to choose from.
U-shaped
C-shaped
Wedge pillow
Modular designs
It's enough to make you wonder whether one is actually better than another.
The truth is, there isn't one pregnancy pillow that's perfect for everyone. The best choice depends on how you sleep, where you're feeling discomfort, how much room you have in bed and whether you want something you'll continue using after your baby arrives.
As a mum of two, I learnt pretty quickly that no two nights of pregnancy feel exactly the same. Some nights my hips needed more support, while other nights it was my bump or lower back that needed the extra cushioning. That's one of the reasons I eventually designed the Belly Bliss Pregnancy Pillow the way I did.
Let's look at the most common pregnancy pillow shapes and who they're best suited to.
U-Shaped Pregnancy Pillow
What Is It?
A U-shaped pregnancy pillow wraps around both sides of your body, supporting your head, back, bump and legs all at once.
Many mums love this design because you can roll from one side to the other without needing to reposition your pillow.
Pros
- Full-body support
- Supports your back and bump at the same time
- Great if you change sleeping sides often
- Helps encourage side sleeping
Things to Consider
While U-shaped pillows offer fantastic support, they are also the biggest option.
They take up a lot of room in the bed, can feel quite warm during summer and aren't always the easiest to climb in and out of during those late-night bathroom trips.
Best For
- Mums with significant hip or back pain
- Anyone who changes sides frequently during the night
- Couples with plenty of bed space
C-Shaped Pregnancy Pillow
What Is It?
A C-shaped pillow curves around one side of your body, supporting your head, bump and knees in one continuous shape.
It offers many of the same benefits as a U-shaped pillow but with a little less bulk.
Pros
- Excellent support for side sleepers
- Easier to reposition
- Takes up less room in bed
- Supports your bump and hips well
Things to Consider
Because it only supports one side of your body at a time, you'll usually need to reposition it when changing sides during the night.
Best For
- Side sleepers
- Mums experiencing hip or lower back discomfort
- Anyone wanting full-body support without the size of a U-shaped pillow
Why I Chose a Modular Design
After using pregnancy pillows myself, I realised they all seemed to have the same problem.
They worked well in one position, but as my body changed throughout pregnancy, so did the support I needed.
Some nights I wanted more support under my bump.
Other nights I needed extra cushioning between my knees or behind my back.
And once my son arrived, I noticed many pregnancy pillows simply became another bulky item taking up space in the spare room.
When I created Belly Bliss, I wanted to design something that could change with you instead of locking you into one shape.
That's why I chose a modular design.
Belly Bliss Modular Pregnancy Pillow
Rather than being permanently sewn into one shape, the Belly Bliss Pregnancy Pillow comes in three separate pieces that can be arranged to suit your body and sleeping position.
That means you can:
- Support your growing bump
- Cushion your knees and hips
- Add support behind your back
- Create different configurations depending on what feels comfortable that night
As your pregnancy progresses, your support needs change too. I wanted one pillow that could adapt with you instead of needing to buy something new.
One of my favourite things about the modular design is that it doesn't stop being useful once pregnancy is over.
After I had my son, I reconfigured the pillow and used it almost every day while breastfeeding. It became one of those products I reached for long after my bump was gone.
I love buying products that last beyond one season of life, and that's exactly what I wanted this pillow to do.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which pregnancy pillow shape is best?
There isn't one perfect shape. The best pregnancy pillow is the one that supports your body where you need it most while fitting your preferred sleeping position and available bed space.
Is a U-shaped pillow better than a C-shaped pillow?
Not necessarily. U-shaped pillows offer more all over support, while C-shaped pillows are often easier to reposition and take up less room.
Why did you choose a modular design?
After my own pregnancies, I wanted something that adapted as my body changed and remained useful after birth. A modular design gave me the flexibility that I couldn't find in traditional pregnancy pillows.
Can I keep using my pregnancy pillow after birth?
Absolutely. One of the reasons I designed the Belly Bliss Pregnancy Pillow this way was so it could continue supporting mums during breastfeeding and postpartum recovery.
Final Thoughts
There's no single "best" pregnancy pillow shape, only the one that's right for you.
Looking back at my own pregnancies, I realised comfort isn't the same every night. As your bump grows and your body changes, the support you need changes too.
That's why I believe flexibility matters.
Whether you choose a U-shaped, C-shaped or modular pregnancy pillow, finding the right support can make a huge difference to how well you sleep and how you feel throughout the day.
A Note From Elle
I created Belly Bliss after experiencing just how difficult sleep can become during pregnancy. Every article I write is based on both my own experience as a mum of two and current pregnancy guidance, because my goal is to help other mums feel more comfortable and better supported throughout pregnancy and beyond.
I designed the Belly Bliss Pregnancy Pillow to be the kind of product I wished I'd had earlier in my own pregnancies, one that adapts to your changing body and continues supporting you well after your baby arrives.
